Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I love to document my faith, adventures, etc!

hearing god's voice

hearing god's voice

In the past few weeks during my devotional time, sometimes I would get so frustrated with God saying to myself, “Why can’t God just speak directly to us sometimes? Why is it so hard to hear his voice during certain seasons?

The past weeks as much as I tried to be patient & still I couldn't shake this feeling that I wasn't truly resting in God’s presence and hearing his voice. I wanted something audible. Something easy. Something simple like a 2 way conversation you see in the Old Testament.

I've always been jealous of Old Testament bible characters. God just tells them what to do it seems (I’m sure that's harder than that sounds) but his voice is clear & audible. And we just have this thing called the Holy Spirit.

The other day when I was reading a passage God answered my prayer & frustration.

While reading Not a Fan by Kyle Idleman, I came across this passage involving the Holy Spirit:

"In John 16 we read one of the last conversations Jesus would have with his disciples before his arrest and crucifixion...

Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don't go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.

John 16:7

...Jesus, God in the flesh, says it's better for him to leave, because when he goes the Holy Spirit will come… Jesus says “it's better for you if I go”-because while God is with you is good, God in you is better. Jesus could be with his followers; but the Holy Spirit would live in his followers."

Personally, this struck home for me. While I've been busy crying out to God on why his answers to my prayers aren't easier to hear- I forgot the fact that the Spirit dwells within me.

I would’ve told you before this how awesome it would’ve been to be able to talk directly with God (like in the old times). Like oh, I'll just hike up the mountain so I can talk to him.

But honestly, that's what our prayer is. Although not everyone may have a moment in their life where they literally hear God’s voice, God’s blessed us with prayer and the Holy Spirit.

I can't remember when I had this moment- whether it was in small group or I read it somewhere- but I remember someone saying how thankful they were for prayer. They just kept talking about how crazy amazing they found prayer.

I guess before that I had never really considered how cool prayer is. We don't even have to speak words for God to know the deepest concerns & things in our heart. The Creator of the Universe is listening to us when we bow our heads or get down to our knees. And he knows how we feel and cares! Kind of crazy amazing, right?

And even cooler than that, the Holy Spirit is in us. Not just occasionally, but dwells in us.

We’re not in this alone. The Holy Spirit lives within each and every one of us. Throughout our day, throughout our week and the 51 other weeks after that and for every single year after that.

Not a Fan even goes to mention that the bible characters we are envious of for hearing God’s voice- they are in fact envious of us for having the power of God inside of us to strengthen and guide us throughout our lives.

When we provide space in our hearts for the Holy Spirit, we’re given the strength and the power we need. The Holy Spirit dwells within us, guiding our hearts as well as comforting us. He calls us, instructs us, renews us, empowers us, & lives in us.

The Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from the dead, lives in you. Romans 8:11

Instead of cries of frustration, cries of anger on where his voice might be- we get the power of the Holy Spirit within us. Because while God with you is good, God in you is better.

Hope you enjoyed this. I have been trying to write a lot more faith based pieces :)
